Sometimes the problem with your bed is not the bed itself, but you! Yes this sounds accusatory, but the fact is that our bodies change over time which can happen more rapidly than you think.
Fear not, a memory foam topper could be just what you need! Mattress toppers are a quality investment if your mattress is too firm, and means that you don’t have to put up with the the hassle of having to take your mattress back and wait for the new one to arrive.
The Firm Bed Myth:
For decades now, New Zealanders have been led to believe that firm beds are the best for your back. The truth? Utter codswallop! With the advent of the space age has come a new product that outshines all existing materials in the bedding world: Memory Foam. Nothing else offers the support and comfort that this advanced material provides. Traditional spring bed manufacturers desperate to salvage their sales rather than innovate and change, scrambled to prevent a revolutionary shift in the way we sleep, seeking approbation from Chiropractic associations and back specialists all over NZ.
As we age, our bodies change and our preferences change also. So that medium feel bed you bought 3-4 years ago may now be too firm, but it’s too soon to change your mattress. This is where a mattress topper could be of great benefit giving you renewed comfort whilst still retaining the existing support you are used to.
If you have bought a new bed recently and found that it is still too firm, consider putting a memory foam mattress topper over it to completely change the feel.
What to look for:
Memory foam toppers offer some of the best support but there are a few catches:
Beware of cheap memory foam or ‘bargain buy’ toppers. These are often namesakes of what they claim to be and can actually be incredibly cheap and nasty. Cheap memory foam has a higher chance of containing contaminants and fillers and is a lower density (around 40-50kg/m³). Memory foam should have a density of around 84kg/m³ to be considered true medical grade. When pushed, the material should have a ‘gluey feel’ and slow bounce back, around 6-7 seconds is ideal. The cover is also an important factor in a topper. It should be stretchy to accommodate the flex of the foam yet resilient to wear and tear. Look for zip off covers that are washable.
Summer / Winter:
Mattress Toppers are also a great addition as a seasonal comfort item. During the cooler winter months adding a memory foam topper to your bed can bring increased support for your body and plush comfort for extra ‘snuggle factor’. The extra support increases your blood flow, keeping you warmer through those cold nights!
Gel infused mattress toppers can be a great advantage for the summer months as the gel expedites the removal of heat from your body to cool you to an optimum temperature for sleeping. Once again, beware of low density foams in these as this can lead to discomfort and an overall lack of satisfaction.
